The historic Topping Retreat, nestled between towering spruce and pines, in a sheltered cove alongside the Kipawa River, is one of Québec's most serene and isolated properties. Formerly owned by the legendary Topping Family, the retreat has lured lumberjacks, fishermen, movie stars and millionaires. Featuring four beautifully crafted log cabins with stone fireplaces and handmade furniture, the property's true value is its undisturbed privacy, world-class fishing, artesian spring water and 90-foot waterfall. Unlike anything available on the market, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of history in a magnificent wilderness setting.

Additional Details

On the market for the first time in over 40 years. Sitting on 230 acres of the most pristine land in the wilderness of northern Quebec, the Topping Retreat is a rare opportunity to own a significant part of Canadian history. In the 1920s, the property was used as a setting for multiple Hollywood productions including The Snow Bride (1923) and The Silent Enemy (1930). During the 1930s through to the 1960s, the property was acquired by the Toppings, a family of New York business magnates and socialites. During this time, Dan Topping, purchased the New York Yankees and led them to 14 pennants and 10 World Series. The Topping Retreat is home to a 90-foot waterfall at Grand Chute which was prominently featured on the bicentennial Canadian $10 bill. Throughout its history, the property has attracted outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, fishermen and whitewater kayakers. By virtue of its location, where the Kipawa River meets Lake Témiscaming, the property has some of the region's best Walleye, Northern Pike, Bass, and Lake Trout fishing. Its reputation has lured sportsmen from around the globe for more than a century. Extremely private, the property is bordered by the Opemica Provincial Park and Crown land. There are no neighbours for over 20km in any direction. The property is outfitted with a wood-burning sauna house, a storage shed, and massive permanent docks. The oldest cabin on the property is the original Topping cabin, which dates back to the early 1930s. Known at the time as the Waldorf of the Wilderness it features three bedrooms and incredible views of the whitewater rapids. The second cabin facing the rapids, built from the extraordinary red pines that surround the property, was completed in 1986. It has two bedrooms on the main floor, massive sleeping loft, oversized fireplace as well as wrap around covered decks with amazing views of the rapids. The third cabin was also constructed by the homeowner, completed in 1995 using the same red pine logs harvested from the property. The great room has soaring ceilings and a beautiful wood-burning stone fireplace. There are 3 bedrooms and a large sleeping loft that could accommodate 8 people and has covered decks on two sides, with amazing views of the lake Témiscaming. The 3 bedroom, 2000sqft.+ main lodge was constructed of massive white pine logs in 2001 by a local master log-builder on a full cement foundation. Featuring, a large sleeping loft with room for an additional 15 people, custom hand-crafted cabinets and countertops in the kitchen, a wood-burning stove, elkhorn chandeliers and a large 32 x 16' covered, screened-in deck. Solar panels with an inverter runs all the lights and chandeliers with power to charge cell phones and other electronics. All the residences on the property are equipped with solar panels to run LED lights, and every building has a portable 100-pound propane tank that run the refrigerators, stoves, water heaters and backup propane lights.
